Places to visit in and near Woodstock

·         Village of Woodstock – Walk around and peruse shops, galleries, and more

  

·         Billings Farm and Museum  (~2 minutes drive, Route 12 N, see sign )- Dairy Farm and Museum of Vermont’s rural past; see farm work first hand, including the afternoon milking. Farm life exhibits, the 1890 farmhouse and daily programs showcase this model farm, a Woodstock landmark since 1871

  

·         Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park  (~2 minutes drive, Route 12 N, left side) – about 550-acre forest and the Rockefeller mansion, which houses an extensive art collection of American landscape paintings

  

·         Sugarbush cheese and maple syrup farm  (~8 min drive, go to Rte 12, at the Billings Farm & Museum entrance follow river road and look for signs (a Vermont farm adventure: dirt, cows, goodies, store and much more)

 

 ·         Quechee Gorge (~ 10 minutes drive, Rte 4 East) – breathtaking gorge, nearby is the Ottauquechee Valley Winery, Cabot Cheese Store - http://www.quecheegorge.com/cabot-quechee-store.php, and antique mall (Quechee Village stores), http://www.quecheegorge.com/vermont-antique-mall.php,

      Farmers Diner, and more. If sunshine and weekend children attractions: train ride, carousel, and more.

  

·         Dartmouth College (and Tuck Business School) (~30 min drive - Hanover, NH - Rte 4 East, I-89 South on the left side, turn right on to ramp to I-91North, exit Norwich, take a right at light and go straight)) - walk around the campus, visit downtown Hanover with its shops, cafes and restaurants

  

·         Covered Bridges – #1Taftsville, Woodstock (Rte 4 East – 5 min, left side), #2 next to the Woodstock Green, #3 Rte 4 West, next to the      

      Lincoln Inn, left side), # 4 Quechee , Rte 4 East, 2nd blinking light turn left

 

·         Vermont institute of Natural Science (VINS) (~ 12 min drive Rte 4 East, left side, see signs VINS) –One of North America’s largest collections of live birds of prey, including owls, hawks and eagles. Walking trails to the Ottauchechee River and Quechee Gorge are nearby

  

·         Simon Pearce Glassworks (~15 min drive, Rte 4 East, 2nd blinking light turn left, end of road turn left, sign on your left side) glass and pottery are designed and handcrafted here using centuries old techniques. Original designs available for purchase in retail store, restaurant above in same location

 

 

·         King Arthur Flour – the baker’s store (~ 40 min drive)– baker’s paradise, well worth to visit - Rte 4 East, I-89 South on left side, turn right on to ramp to I-91North, exit Norwich, take a left, turn left on Rte 5, sign on left side

  

·         Plymouth Notch Historic District (~ 30 min drive) – home of the 1924 Summer White House, one of the best preserved Presidential Birthplaces in the nation. The area includes the homes of Calvin Coolidge’s family and neighbors, general store, church, cheese factory and dance hall 

  

·         Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour (~ 1 hour) North in Waterbury, (Route 12 N, 107 East, I-89 N, 100 N)

 

·         Brewery Tour (do it yourself)  - Long Trail brewery at Bridgewater corners (~12 min), Rte 4 W

- Harpoon brewery at Windsor (25 min drive), Rte 4 East,12, 5S)

- Seven barrel brewery at West Lebanon, NH (25 min) Exit 18 I-89,

                                                                      On your left when you turn off the ramp to the right (required U-turn)

                                      Optional:          - Vinery at Quechee George – test samples of fruit wines (15 min), on                 

                                                                 your left after passing the Gorge bridge, second building across the 

                                                                 visitors center.

You may start in Woodstock, going West to Bridgewater , passing the General store on your left; not far behind is the brewery on your left. Do the self-guided tour. Go the entire way back passing Woodstock and turn right on to Rte 12, at Hartland 3 Corners (Hartland village) turn right at the stop sign on to Rte 5 South; pass I-91 and go straight; after 2-3 min see brewery sign on left side. Ask for 2-3 samples for testing, order your beer and they have GOOD FOOD! You can sit outside, too; children can run around and play outside. Afterwards go back Rte 5 to I-91 and go north. Exit highway to West Lebanon (New Hampshire Airport) going on to I-89 south passing the Connecticut and leave at exit #18. Make a U-turn and on the right is the brewery. If you are in a good mood after  some beer  you may go shopping . This is our shopping drive with shops like Best Buy, Staples, Price Shopper, Kmart, Kool’s, Wal-Mart, Borders, JC Penny and much more. On your way back to Woodstock go on I-91 North and  go straight until leaving at exit # 1 and follow Rte 4 West to Woodstock.

·         Montshire Museum, Hanover, VT (~ 35 min)–  Rte 4 East, I-89 South on right side, turn right on to ramp to I-91North, exit Norwich, take a right turn and immediately another right turn and follow the signs.  For young children (3-13) a paradise, hands on all-you-can-learn- about. In summer you can bring your cooler, sit in the shadow and have some lunch; your children will enjoy the “water games”,  - bring your beach cloths for the children. The 2-story museum has also for adults a few sections you can learn a lot: a bee colony, an ant colony, a medical education center, a wind center, an audio center and much more. A lot of trails are available more for hiking than education. No Food or Drinks available! Admission. If you plan in advance a lot of programs are available, especially for children.
